Default Steering column support bracket removal

Is there an easy way to remove the big cast steering column support piece? At some point my car leaked and I have the dash out having the speedometer repaired. While I was I in there I saw how rusty all the support brackets and that cast piece are. So I took everything out and blasted and painted them. But that big piece has two bolts way in the front, top, that are killer to get out, and if I did get them out, I might not ever get them back in. Thanks for any help.

Hi MMJ,
Sorry, but no.
Getting at the cast iron support is only easy once the steering column and brake/clutch support is out.
Regards,
Alan

Yes. I did it. I removed the steering column (not all that difficult) and also removed the brake/clutch mechanism.. The reason for removing the brake/clutch assembly had to do with a Hydrobeast (aka Hydroboost) install.

BTW. Working under the driver's side instrument panel is so much easier if you remove the steering column. Not a difficult job.
I really don't like removing/reinstalling the instrument panels/center console, etc. The plastic substrates become crystal hard and fracture easily. It's really difficult to work with them without damaging something. I think every time you remove/reinstall the interiors of these cars you will inadvertently damage something. With luck and expertise, the damage is just minimal. With luck and expertise, that's the best you're going to do.

once you get that cast support out, grind down the edges the factory left them rough with sharp edges, sharp enough to cut wires.
if your searching for the interior leak, inspect the seam where the fiberglass firewall,
mates to the metal birdcage,
(Bottom edge of the Windsheild, whcih you cannot see with windsheild in place)
they all seperate and leak here after enough years. this seam runs right above your cast support.

Thanks! I do see some cut wires in there, was wondering what caused it.
