Default Alternator on the wrong side?

All the photos I've seen of the alternators is they are on the drivers side. Mine is on the passenger side. I'm confused, is it anything to do with the year or do you think it was part replacement motor. This is a '68 coupe with a 454.

I've got the long pump. I guess that means leaving well enough alone otherwise I have to change them both out. I can only imaging all the pulley and belt alignment issues.

Can you post pictures. Would love to see a big block with a long water pump and the altenator on the passenger side. Is the engine supposed to be original in your vette ?

'68 Big blocks were 427's, so if you got a 454, it's NOM. Only the previous owner knows what that engine came out of. The donor could be anything from a Chevelle or Camaro to a dump truck. The alternator wiring harness should have splices in it somewhere to accommodate the location swap.

The previous-previous owner swapped out the 427 390HP with a 396 some time before 1978. My dad, the previous owner put in the 454. We know exactly where the 454 came from. Needless to say, I'm not surprised with the engine swap that the alternator is on the wrong side. I just assumed he just changed out mainly the block and heads. I guess he used the mounts that came with the 454.

I can't decide if there is any reason to go through the work to change it back around when it's not really hurting anything.

Here's some shots of it. Be kind, she's a work in progress and hasn't really been wrenched on much over the last 20 years.

Setting up the pulleys and belts for a stock set up without power steering, isn't that big a deal, but you know the saying, if its not broke don't fix it, unless you want the correct look.

My motor has ps with the long pump and alternator like yours also, I wouldn't have it any other way. So much room, its a joy.

The only reason I can see to relocate the alternator to the drivers side is you have run out of other projects.

My '68 427 has about an inch between fan and radiator. I'm surprised he was able to get this in without it hitting. What did he do, bolt the fan directly to the pulley instead of using a clutch?

Yep. No clutch. You can see the lack of a clutch in the top photo. I don't care for not having a clutch. Too much fan noise and I think it extra load on the engine. The 454 isn't known for a quick revving and the solid fan doesn't help any. I want to get a new radiator with a dual spal fan setup and get rid of the fan on the motor altogether.

What you might want to do is remove the steel fan and get a flex fan made of aluminum or fiberglass. They flex flat when they get to high speed and create much less drag when running fast. You could be eating 25 hp or so at high speed with the fan bolted solid. The best way would be to go back to the short pump, but you'd have a lot of money in the short pump brackets, a lot of money.

I added this subtitle so it is easy to find in a search in the future. Those pictures are bound to be useful in discussions like this one day.

As to changing things back, unless you have money burning a hole in your pocket or you want a very stock original look because jerks at shows say "Hey, your corvette is all wrong because...", then I would leave it alone other than changing the fan.

What's the rest of the car look like?

I like the idea of the using the other fans, however my plan is to get rid of it altogether and use fans on the rad. I'm going to upgrade the alternator to handle them. This is down the road. What do you think of doing the dual fan and having them turn on at different temps?

The rest of the car is in really good shape for not a whole lot done to it. It's been in the garage since 1978. I can't speak for before that. Normal wear and tear for 65K miles. I have a couple of pics in my profile.

The set-up you are questioning works fantastic. I have one under the hood and am very pleased with it. Good luck with the project.

NOW THAT'S what I'm talking about! I love the setup. What do you have for the fan(s) and radiator, specifically? I assume no cooling issues.
