It depends on your area of the country. In my part of NC, cars have to have a visual inspection for 81's (I have an 80 so I assume the same applies for an 81) but no sniffer test. Everything has to be there whether it works or not. Supposedly. At age 35 model years, there is no inspection requirement for smog controls, just the usual lights, wipers, and horn stuff. Check with an inspection station in your area or call the state DMV for your requirements.
Makes no difference in Texas as it's 24 years or older. Where I live in Texas they do not test or look at the emissions system. I never get out of the vehicle. All they look at is tires lights wiper blades. They never look under the hood.
