Finally fixed it. I hooked the shut-off valve to a full-time vacuum source and capped the lead through the firewall. The car gets cold now and the "Max" setting on the A/C works.

If the engine temp runs hotter than usual, consider a "thin" electric pusher fan for the front of the condenser.
Like the other member said---there might not be a lot of room for the hood to open all the way (my hood lacks about 5" from being fully opened)...but the engine runs much cooler with the pusher fan helping get more ambient air through the radiator (it's like a two-stage turbine now....LOL)
Good to hear it's cold now. I'm guessing it's still over charged though. Your pressures are too high. Too low or high can kill the compressor due to lack of oil.

So from what your saying it sounds like vacuum shuts the hot water flow. I've been trying to fine that out.
