What a Weekend
Since purchasing my current '73, this weekend was the first time I have done any major work to it. Well, I'm not sure I would consider it major, but it was something that was needed. This is my third C3 Corvette and all have had mushy brakes. Well, this one was good for a little bit, but then at the last run to the local Cars and Coffee, the brake went to the floor when I had to get on them a little harder than stop and go traffic. Sure enough, leaky lip seals. I knew it was going to happen, calipers were last serviced in 1989 and the Corvette has accumulated less than 3,000 miles since then.
So I replaced all four corners with black powder coated, stainless steel o-ring calipers, steel lines on the trailing arms, pads, and all four rubber hoses from VB&P. Everything came apart and went back to together super easy. I decided not to replace the rotors as they are still well within spec, and the rotor run out on the rear only measured .002". However, the rear rotors have had their rivets removed and were turned at some point, but the fronts are still intact.
Then came the bleeding, I started off pumping to get a little pressure, then used a hand vac to pull most of the air out, and then had my mom help pump while I opened and closed the bleeders. For those interested, I started with the passenger side rear, inside bleeder, outside bleeder, then moved to the drivers side (again, inside first, then outside bleeder). Then did the passenger side front, and then drivers side. After the air was expelled in all four corners, I went ahead and went back one more time in the same order just to make sure.
WoW! These brakes are incredible. I now have maybe a 1/4" of travel before they start grabbing. Puts my other daily drivers to shame. This is my first car with manual brakes, but I have to say, I see no reason for power brakes or the hydro boost at this time. The car is not all stock, not all numbers matching, but the appearance looks original and I plan to keep it that way for the foreseeable future.
Now I know, all threads are worthless without pictures. Thanks for reading, I just wanted to share the great weekend.
My Mom sharing with her Facebook world what she is doing.

All Jacked Up!
And inspiring the next generation! Her eyes match the interior, so she is already claiming the Vette as her's (at only 6 months!)
