Default Accelerator Pedal... dumb blonde needs help!

Last night a friend took my 68 around the block and the accelerator pedal came loose. I folded into a pretzel and some how squeezed down there, I can see that it is not the pivot point like most post talk about. It is where the cable attaches. There is just a hole in the top. What is wierd is, I can not see the cable at all.
Is there a easier way to get down there to it, without pulling the dash or at least blower box?
I need to get it going soon!
Anyone know of a utube video or some pictures that might help.
Thanks
Ruthie

I'm a new Vette rookie.....my gas pedal just laid over to the right against the trans tunnel.

I did the pretzel thing (a bright light helps too).....the GM genius-design plastic mounting bracket broke into two pieces.

For your problem....the cable end is difficult to see/find once it jumps out of the slot at the top of the pedal arm and goes into the insulation....

maybe you could "grab" it with a pair of needle-nose pliers and re-connect it to the arm...

then slightly "crimp" the slot with a pair of channel-grip pliers so the cable doesn't jump out again (provided the metal end-piece of the cable-wire didn't come aloose.

Then take two Aleve and go for a cruise.

Maybe you can have someone push it back in from the engine side then you can grab it easier from the inside.
Take the drivers side seat out and get as comfy as possible.

The '68 assembly is a one year item too so lets hope that's not broken.

Good luck.

It's actually easier than it appears. If your car is an automatic, you need to remove the kickdown switch. If your car has A/C, you need to remove the duct section that passes under the brake pedal. These two items are not very difficult to remove if that's what faces you. You can now reach up to where the cable comes through the firewall. If you are missing the plastic grommet at the nub end of the cable, there is no way for you to reconnect it to the pedal arm without that grommet. If the grommet is there (and you kind of have to wonder what cause it to pop out, so is it broken or worn through?) you remove the grommet from the cable, pass the cable through the hole, attached the grommet to the cable and voila!

If I understand your problem, there is a little plastic bushing that keeps the end of the cable from pulling through where it attaches to the top of the rod. Its possible that plastic piece broke loose and the cable pulled through the opening. Good news is if this is the problem, its a cheap fix. Good luck.

edit: gerry72 beat me to it.

Remove the four retaining bolts for the driver's seat and remove it. Much easier to work under the dash. It's a small 'price' to pay for relative comfort while working under there.

P.S. Consider what else might need to be done in there while doing this project. (new speakers in the dash?, clean/lube any heater/a/c hardware?, change carpeting?, etc., etc.)

You all are GREAT!
I am going home after work and giving it another shot.

And by the way, I really am a grease monkey at heart. Oldest of 3 daughters of a machanic, and just really likes pulling wrenches. Just grew up doing it.

Like the others said, pull the seat! It's sooo easy and gives great access to the pedal area. I've had mine out a half dozen times.

A belated welcome from a wrench in NorCal.

Google: quick release bolts

All you would need to do to adapt it would be to enlarge the hole in the seat bracket and the reinforcement plate to allow the bolt to fit up through the existing hardware, then get a hardened steel shim notched out to slide under the bolt. You release the lever, slide out the shim and lift the seat and there you have it. You could also use it as a bolt with a handle by just welding the nut to the seat bracket. But given how easy it is to pull the seat and how often you do that, I doubt you'd have a viable market for it.
