Default vin number problem

Looked at a 1977 vette today. Last 6 numbers of vin are one number off. Last 6 numbers on title are 420345. Last 6 on a pillar are 120345. All 77 cars are supposed to start with 4. The title matches the block. Could this possibly be a factory mistake. All other numbers and letters on the title and pillar match except for that 1 instead of 4. Any suggestions on what I should do. Nervous about taking a chance when they don't match.

Thanks Bob

Not trying to scare you but I know as fact here in florida they would not title that car without tons of red tape and research if they would title it at all, florida can be a pain,
So...you need to find out why your title doesn't match, scary, start with giving the vin off the car to dmv asking them to tell you if it's a legal car as in not reported stolen, then go from there,

A distorted 4 could be mistaken for a 1 . Clean up that vin plate good and you may just find that 1 is a 4 and you have no problem. Those plates can get rusty and hard to read. Get a good digital pic of the plate and check it out that way if needed. Post it up here too.

Bob

There are a couple of other places to look in an attempt to triangulate the correct serial number sequence. Look at the engine stamp pad and find the VIN derivative. There are some photos in the writeup I did of my 78 and it shows (and explains) where to find the VIN derivative on both the engine and transmission (M38).

Also, check on the driver's side door jamb. The tire pressure label should have the VIN typed onto it along with tire pressure information. Hope this helps!

Almost certain a typo at the DMV. Should call and see if it can be corrected

The title is right Dave it's the tag on window pillar that has the one. Block is right will try to check trans. Can't read the tire pressure tag faded out. Anywhere else to look? I really like this car very little rust.

Thanks Bob

Is the tag held on with rosette style head rivets? or pop rivet? Perhaps at some point the vin tag was destroyed and replaced and at that point the mistake was made?

How about a pic? Hard to believe it left the factory that way. The original dealer who sold it & the buyer did not see the error, or anyone else over the years. Hopefully just a distorted number.

Hi Bob,

I agree with Karol, it would be great to see a picture. I hate to question your vision, but like other's have said, the 4 could look like a 1. Compare the other 4 in the VIN to the one you are (possibly) mistaking for a 1.

By the way, it is a clean looking '77 with good options, maybe even an original V54 car?

What's it? What might have looked like a 1 is actually a 4?

Sorry for the confusion Mike. Pete posted the link to the corvette registry and that's the car I'm looking at. A previous owner put it on the registry.

I've seen the car in the link, but the information given does not resolve your numbers issue.

Curious, how is the seller explaining this away?

Nice looking car. Hope you can get the vin number resolved

He's not. He bought the car from out of state and never looked at the tag on the post. He's working trying to figure it out also.
