I have to replace my PS control valve because it is leaking, and i was just wondering if anybody could tell me how challenging of a task this is? i believe i am going to get the valve from Rik’s Corvette because i don’t have to pay for the core charge. Any suggestions and tips would be much appreciated.
Changing the control valve out is not a difficult task. One 'tip' is to use something (flat-bladed screwdriver, etc.) to spread/wedge into the split around the threaded member in the main steering rod. That will make it a LOT easier to back the control valve out. Also, count the number of turns required to remove that control valve. Then, you can install the new one the same number of turns and be fairly close on your "toe" adjustments. If the steering wheel is a little off-center when you get done, you can adjust tie-rods a bit on your own, or take it to an alignment shop for ONLY the tie rod adjustment.
P.S. If you change out the control valve, you really should replace the P/S hoses at the same time (if they have several years on them). They are normally what leaks on the C3 P/S system.
In my case, I elected to rebuild my leaking control valve with a kit from one of the vendors on this site. Turned out to be an easy job with the available videos out there and with Jim Shea's papers as guidance: http://jimshea.corvettefaq.com/
Also as mentioned, I replaced the four hoses the same time.
Mine's been leak free.

I just did this last weekend, it is pretty straight forward. Pickle fork to separate the joint. Make sure to clock the hoses at the correct angles and check the hoses for any binding or rubbing.
