Default Carb troubles?

hello,
i have a 1968 corvette 327. it is all stock with the exception of an edelbrock 2101 performer intake. it is timed to 4 BTDC and idle 850 RPM. Here's the issue, it will idle and sounds great, but when i put it in gear, idle drops and dies. forget about it moving, because that's not gonna happen. i've heard it could be a vacuum leak. when i unplug the vacuum hose from the distributor to the carb, nothing happens. suggestions? it's driving me crazy! thanks to all...

Most of your vacuum comes from your inlet manifold for wiper door head lights .So try blocking that off at your manifold and see how it runs

I would inspect all your vacuum lines and like the other dude says the vacuum to the headlights comes off of your intake manifold. If you have a leak anywhere in the system it could cause the engine to stall. If one of your headlights has a leak it will effect your engine at the manifold.

One of the things I love about my 1977 it will raise the Passenger Side Headlight when I start the car and Blink at me LOL My 1977 has a release under the dash to reduce the vacuum to the headlights.

Read and watch these. You probably have a bad line somewhere in that older car.

Did you just install this intake manifold or was it installed before than just started to have problems. If you installed it then you missed hooking something up and have a leak. If it was previously installed and all of a sudden one day it started to happen then you have a cracked line somewhere in the system.

Unless your carb is in such bad shape that it is sucking air at the base gasket then you have a leak somewhere in the system on a bad line or T.

You said it makes no difference when you unplug the vacuum advance, have you tested it to make sure the advance diaphragm is good?

Get a can of carb cleaner, start spraying it at 12:00 ( the dist ) and work your way around the engine while you have a vacuum gauge attached, have a coworker watch the gauge.

Spray everything !!!..

And work the head lights, air, etc while doing said above.

Keep asking your helper what the gauge is doing.

Hope this helps.

i'm completely stumped. i've sprayed down everything. in signs of leaks. i time it correctly. (still sounds like there's a little flutter in there, like it's missing. original Q-jet has been completely rebuilt. but i just can't put it in gear without it dying out. i've detached all lights and wiper vacuum from the engine.

Hook up your timing light and see what it's doing when you put it in gear.

Yep. Idle speed is set with the car in gear.
