I bought a 71 Corvette today in Tampa. Almost immediately, the car developed a miss. Cruising at 60-70 mph, it was missing (skipping) terribly. I made it to a garage and the mechanic took it for a ride with me. He suggested that I change the wires and spark plugs. We found that a couple of wires were crossed and it seemed to idle better.
We took it out for a test drive and the skip is still there. I'm trying to get the car back to CT. by the end of the weekend.
Is there anyone in the area that may be able to take a look at it for me or recommend someone I can take it to. I have no tools.
I was thinking that the timing may be off. The garage I took it to didn't have a tack/dwell or timing light.
Took the car to Burnyzz Speed Shop and found out it was a fuel problem. Gas tank, filter were full of crap. They drained, flushed and sealed the gas tank and blew out the fuel lines.
Now they are having a problem with the carburetor. Keeps flooding itself out. They are going to replace it.
Not sure if you got yours from a dealer or not but if so, I've noticed that a ton of them will leave just enough gas in the tank to start up and load on a trailer when necessary. Got our '69 from a dealer and there was actually water in the tank, you could literally see a small amount inside after removing the filler cap. Brought it home without inspecting it that far (nooby move) and I drive it around the neighborhood only to have it sputter in and out of life and eventually it stalled numerous times before I got it back to the garage. Filled the tank full, flushed out the tank with an additive that helps with the moisture, and drove out the rest of the "bad" fuel. She runs like a champ now. Just sucks having to learn the hard way. If only you could have seen the look on my face as the car was now ours, including any of its problems.

I bought it from a private seller. The car rides great, even the AC works! Like all old cars, there are things that need to be done to it and I went in anticipating that.
It's just frustrating that when you ask for something simple (having the car serviced) after informing the PO that I would be attempting to drive the car back to CT, that it wasn't done.
I know the look on your face, it was on mine also but you really didn't want to hear what I had to say after it broke down!
Hopefully, it will be as good as new and I won't have any other problems the rest of the way.
