what's the best way to restore the luster and polish the outer curved edges?
will strip the paint off the whole grill, clean, and mask the front edges of the squares, then repaint in satin black.
obviously i will change the reflector colour from black, not sure what's under there now, but i believe white is better for the reflectors.
not going for 100% correct, so long as they look better than they do now...
I sand blasted the grills on my `73, powder coated satin black then used chrome paint and a fine brush to do the edges. Wasn't going for a show car, but it turned out great.
I just sent mine in to the chrome shop and they re-chromed them. I don't plan to paint them black, I was, but then I saw them chromed and they just look sweet. I would say just have them re done.
Painted mine satin black, wet sanded (600 grit paper) the black off the chrome and touched up and spots with chrome paint. Came out fine for my "above average driver quality" 73:
The leading edges of the front grill slats should be chrome...along with the outer rim [mounting] piece. It appears that someone had tried to paint those leading edges and they are now chipped. Use a chemical stripper to remove ALL paint from the part. Only leave the stripper on long enough for the paint to loosen for removal.
Once the paint is off, you can attempt to polish one of the leading edges and an area of the rim. If they polish up well, you are "good to go". If not, you can have them rechromed, you can paint them in similar fashion to the original parts, or you can paint them with a different color scheme.
Good luck.
P.S. As mentioned, don't do any additional damage to those pieces. They are very expensive to replace....or to repair.
