My 71 hood release had a bad bracket inside. It worked, but was not right. I bought a new bracket and hood release cable and had it installed. At this point, I have to push the hood release back in to reset it so that the hood can close. My mechanic tells me that this is normal and that there is no spring or anything else that would cause it to return to the position that allows the hood to close. Is he right or is my hood release installed incorrectly?
Hi l,
There's a spring on the driver's side latch that moves the release cable back to the 'closed' position when you release the handle under the dash.
Your mechanic just wants you to go away and not expect anything from him.

Alan
Sounds like you are missing the return spring as Alan has shown.

Yup - but I have gotten into the habit of pushing the handle "back in" when I pop the hood. If you close the hood with the handle in the "out" position you stand the chance of the hood getting stuck closed...
