Speedometer cable question

Default Speedometer cable question

I need to replace one or both of my speedometer cables as its bouncing a fair bit. While looking at the parts I started to wonder why pre cruise control cars with AT used two separate cables but manual cars used only one. Anyone know why they used two separate cables?

Don't hold me to this, but I'm guessing it had something to do with the installation of the cable, on the assembly line.

The automatic trans is wider than the 4 speed, and because of that, it's fit in the trans tunnel was a lot tighter. To make connecting the cable to the trans easier, I assume that the lower cable was installed on the trans, before the body was dropped, and then it was connected to the upper cable.

As I said, this is just a guess, but a quick look at an AIM, might confirm it???

I have a automatic 74 and I installed the Single Speedo cable on mine with no problems at all.
