Default '79 tilt steering column Q

Will the tilt steering column that I have from my '79 fit into my '73? Would major changes be needed to do this or is it a no go? The column from the '73 isn't tilt and is in need of repair anyway.

Thanks

Yes. I know this swap has been done before, and I don't recall any major issues. I think the 79 column is a little shorter, which gives you slightly more room.

The biggest difference is the 79 column has the control for the high beam, incorporated into the turn signal stalk. You can either ignore it and continue using the foot switch, or adapt the switch to your 73. You'll want to use the 79 ignition switch, because they're different than the straight column switches.

Someone here should be able to give you more details on the swap. You may try a Forum search, because I'm pretty sure it's been discussed before.

This paper has everything you need to know about installing a later model T&T column (1977-1982) into your early Vette (1969-1976).

I put a 79 column into my 72. Jim's paper is the gospel for this although I trimmed my shroud 2.25" (forgive me Jim I only had a plain ruler ).

You can extend the wiring harness from the foot switch dimmer to the column and use the original connector. I find having the dimmer on the column much more convenient than the floor switch.
