hello all new here and had a couple of questions.I have a friend that has a nice 82 crossfire BUT he has pulled the motor and installed a 350 carburated engine. He is telling me that it has to be rewired to do away with the fuel injection to run.I honestly have no idea but curiosity has gotten the best of me so i decided to ask someone here that really knows these cars( because he does not at all)Basically they are not getting fire for it to run and they have stopped working on it because they have not got a clue as to where to go next.
I also was wondering about the rear window, somehow in the work process they broke the rear window.I have looked around and do not see anything for the car at all.Can these windows still be found?
You seem to be extremely interested in a car which does not belong to you.
If your friend installed a replacement engine which does not need a computer to run, he is mistaken about the "rewiring." If his particular engine requires a computer, he should have gotten the computer and the wiring harness when he got the replacement engine or he will need to retrofit his 82 harness.
If the car will not fire and does not need a computer, your friend needs to check his ignition set up.
I believe replacement rear glass for the 78-82s is still available through auto glass installers.
Wow. It's a shame your friend threw out the baby with the bath water so to speak. I own a unmolested '82 all original that runs perfectly. Over the years I've spoken to many other '82 owners that wanted to get rid of the Crossfire setup and run into a multitude of problems.
If your friend was still working on the Crossfire setup you would get a lot of help here. Unfortunately what your friend has now is a Frankenstein which will can only be resurrected with an expert's help.
A cautionary tale to other Crossfire owners if nothing else.
It is not difficult to do a carb conversion on a xfire. There is no need to rewire anything for the engine to run. You even use the existing dist cap, and the existing 12v and tach wire connectors if using a non computer gm style hei distributor. You do not need to cut any of the xfire sensor wires either, they can be tucked away for later return to xfire if needed. You will have to rewire the 700r4 tcc to enable lock up and maybe do some minor rewiring for the ac to work correctly. Maybe your friends went to bubba tech for their auto mechanics courses!
Ok let me clarify here,He bought a running car that is was very nice.I told him not to go messing with it.That being said i totally did not want anything to do with it at all,i refused to in my eyes somewhat destroy the car.I have a couple old cars but keep mine stockish as can be.
Anyway after listening to what i hear is going on i got totally frustrated and thought i would get some solid answers from someone who really knows the car,i have never owned a vette but always wanted one.And yes he has been paying a couple of different people to do what has been done so far.people that apparently do not know what is going on.He is not a mechanic and neither are the mechanics working on it i am assuming. They are thinking they need to change the harness,i didnt think this is right but again i am not a vette man.
Ok the rear window,he decided to change a hinge from what i am understanding and when he closed it it blew, now how he accomplished that who knows. Thanks for the helpfull replys i will pass it on and see what happens.
Uhm , he replaced the hinge on the rear glass and it blew when he shut it???
If that's so , your buddy has an 82 collectors edition ....tell him to put the crossfire back in and quit molesting the car .
