Default Rochester dating code question

Most of the original Rochester carbs I have seen have a DA after the number. I'm looking at one for my 69, but here is the stamping on it. Why does this look different than other ones I have seen? Thanks for any help.

Mark

Hi Mark,
I believe the letters indicate the plant at which the carb was manufactured.
Don't know enough to know why the carb in the picture doesn't have the letters.
Sorry!
Regards,
Alan

Hey Mark,

The 7029207 quadrajet was available as a service replacement for years after 1969. This could be one of these units. The main tell tale (since your date code could be correct for1969, but also correct for 1979) would be to look at the "front" of the carburetor. The front would be where your vacuum advance line connects. If you have a triangular-shaped pad w/ a hole in it on the right hand side, this is a service carburetor.

Original 69 L46 carburetors were either stamped "29207 DA" or "7029207 DA". Early carbs had no date underneath (stamped on the base) and later ones had the date either next to the part # or underneath of it.
The one you are looking at is definitely a 1979 service replacement. Giveaway in the part number is the added "0". My guess is later year carbs had 8 digit part nubers so they added a "0" (just a guess) to compensate. Also the dots before and after the number.

Most 7029207s on the market are service replacements. Even some with the DA designation are early replacments. What is the build date of your car?

What is the buld date of you car?

Thanks a lot guys, that really helps. I think my build date was September 4, 1969. So I would want a carb built a month or two before that, correct?

Hi MMJ,
I believe carburetors were one of the parts that was built in 'batches', so you may not find just the date you 'think' would be appropriate.
You might find one dated a little closer to your car's production or a couple of months earlier…. but less than 6 months earlier.
Regards,
Alan

Alan I could not agree more. Often you will see different carburetors for sale with the same date. As Alan said, built in batches. I think the same thing is true for some other parts like alternators.
