Default Part ID help please

Hello gang!
Just bought a nice '75 and started to labor of luv in fixing her up. First thing I noticed was about 30 layers of black electrical tape around the wires coming from the alternator (never a good sign). The main power wire was connected with a household wire nut. But, what has me stumped is what I found spliced in the white wire...see pics.
My assumption is that it is a resistor for the radio but I may be mistaken. Any ideas??

A little internet search leads me to believe this is a diode. This one appears to have been "re-engineered" by some back yard mechanic. What alternatives do I have to replace this?

Ok, more research results...learning more about alternators than I knew before. This diode was spliced in the Wire 1: Field Excite/Warning Light Indicator Input wire. Now, I'm wondering if it's even necessary to be there? Can the #1 wire be wired direct without the diode?

I've never seen that before and don't know what a diode is used for in alternator wiring but im sure someone with technical skills will chime in soon. good luck

From looking at other posts and other sites, the diode is used to prevent feedback and run-on. One post suggested moving the exciter wire to the accessory side of the ignition instead of splicing in a diode. Not really sure how to make that happen so I think I will pick up a 276-1661 diode from Radio Shack today and solder it in then cover everything up with heat shrink.

Perhaps this was someone's fix for a parasitic draw in the alternator.

Spliced in the Radio Shack diode and buttoned it back up. At least I know it's in better condition than when I found it. Next, onto the non-working horn. For some reason, every Corvette that I have ever bought has had a non-functioning horn. Hopefully just a bad ground and not a bad horn.

Looking at the serrations on it, and the red paint, it is one of three positive diodes in an alternator rectifier bridge, that Bubba got ahold of.

It's a diode, better to fix the real problem and leave it out.
