Default Wheel noise

Hullo learnered friends from across the big pond.

Been busy out and about in the old Vette as we have actually had a not to shabby summer over here and its still quite good. Not been on much recently.
Maybe the good weather is a sign for our big decision on independence on Thursday

Anyway, back to the matter at hand. Old FrankenVette has developed a squeaking noise from the passenger side wheel. Kinda sounds like an engine belt slipping. Comes and goes. The rear wheel when you hold the top and push and pull feels as if there is a bit of movement much how you would feel if the wheel wasn't tightened up properly. Lug nuts are tight.

What do you think? Wheel bearing?

I've loved my trips to Scotland, the land of my ancestors the Barrs' and the Christies' I've also been watching the political developments for independence with some interest, we'll soon see.

Yes I believe you have a wheel bearing issue. Others will chime in but with cars this old almost everything needs to be serviced anyway so you can't go wrong picking something...(sarcasm) How old is the car and how many miles?

Its a 75 and the mileage is undefined. It has had a lot of use in its near 40 years Certainly no garage queen...

I'll get the wheels off on both sides at the weekend, well, depending on the result

If you are unsure where the sound is coming from (tough to judge from inside the vehicle), have someone listen as you drive by them slowly [but fast enough to get the sound you are hearing].

Knowing whether the noise is coming from the front or back wheel is very important. Front wheel is relatively easy to work on/re-lube/repair. Rear can be difficult...or worse...depending on the problem found.

If you can't detect the source, remove the front wheel and check the bearing for smoothness/damage. Re-lube and reassemble if you find no problem, then do the sound test again. Sometimes, just greasing the bearing will fix a noise issue. {Remember that you need to re-PACK the wheel bearing with grease...not just wipe it with new lube.} And, if fixed, you don't need to dig into the rear wheel.

Cheers for that. 99% sure that its the rear. Roof off and the windows down and you can hear it and feel the movement.

Fingers crossed and we will be celebrating Independence Day next year on the 18th September 2015.

Some real dirty tactics going on with the UK Government.

There is play in the bearing and with most tapered bearings this is an ominous sign. I'm not an expert by any means with trailing arms but isn't this a big red flag?

I was wondering where you stood on the issue. The forum members get pretty excited over such issues as synthetic vs conventional oil, I can imagine if we bring in politics....what religion are you? Just kidding....

Thanks dude, hope its not a trailing arm issue will be difficult to get a set over here I reckon.

On Independence, I am a YES vote. Why would any country not wish to stand on its own two feet, especially when you have the resources that we do.
The scare stories from the UK Government are horrendous.
We are the only country that has oil that our England brothers leaders state that is a burden.

I don't know how much you are aware of that the Scottish government has delivered in since it was given powers to run our education, health service and transport? They have given us:
Free Healthcare including prescribed medication from any pharmacy.
Free General Practitioner doctor consultation.
Free Hospital treatment which means no one pays for medical treatment at the point of treatment.
Free University tuition for all, even funding for adults to attain a Degree.
Free public transport for retired residents
Free Personal care for the elderly which means that we have a daily visit to make sure our elderly are up and safe every day.

Imagine what we could do if we were in control of all the revenue in the country.

Remember we are a small nation of 5 million which is only 1% of the European Union but we supply 20% of all the EU fish stock, 25% of all renewable energy and 60% of oil reserves for the whole of Europe. Its no wonder that the UK Government wants us to vote to stay together.

Scots are renowned for there inventiveness, TV, telephone, Steam engine, Penicillin, even the tarmac on your roads as well as a whole load of other things. The chip in your bank card was a Glasgow guys idea.

Sorry for the political broadcast, but being an independent country yourself you will understand

possible might be halfshaft joints if not wheel bearings

Hard to tell without taking a look but have you considered if the noise could be a brake issue. Any change in noise when the brakes are applied?My family is also of Scottish ancestry and are watching the vote. Independence has worked out pretty well on this side of the pond.
