Default Headlight Assembly Removal

Have not even looked yet, but can the complete headlight assembly be removed out the top with the bumper cover in place?

Took my '81 back to the paint shop to some touch-ups and the headlight covers need redone and painter wants them out. Told him that I was not sure if I could get them out with the bumper cover on or not.....

Thanks,
LannyL81

You'll have to work from underneath. They will not come out the top.

AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!....I was afraid of that! Heck I had the bumper cover and front nose support off before I took the headlight assemblies out prior to paint.

Guess I had better gather-up some tools and something to lay on and take with me to the paint shop.

Thanks for the reply.

It helps if the grills are also removed

Mike , it was the only way I thought they went in . I looked at the under side but with the airdeflector and spoiler , I saw no way to put in from underneath . Mine too was back from the paint booth with fresh paint . My headlight relays , vacumm lines , horn , etc were removed . I taped the edges of both the headlight assembly and the opening ... and also laid towels down on the air deflector and away bar ...then just slipped it in ....it took a little maneuvering , but it can be done .

I think the key is have the vacuum relays and everything else removed before you start. It requires a great deal of patience and maneuvering, but it can be done from the top

How about instead of the entire assembly, I just remove the headlight covers?...I think that is what they are called.

I have the lamps and the part that surrounds the lamps out; is it possible to unbolt the pivots and get just the covers out?

Again, I do not have my car at home so I can look at this myself.
Guess I will just take my tools and head to the paint shop and then determine what I can do. I for sure am going to take some painter's tape with me to apply to the edges for protection.

Have not even thought about putting them back in yet!!....And yes they will be freshly re-painted.

Can you see the bolts heads? Six of them up under there...in the dark

I did.

Does you painter actually want them out, or only up so he can paint them? Up would save you a lot of work.

The painter wanted them off the car, that is the way there were done the first several times they were painted. Hopefully this new painter is better than the previous.

Anyways I was able to get the tops off, pretty much all by feel as I could not get an eyeball on any of the bolts nor was there any light. I even managed to not nick or scratch the body or the hood.

Now if I can just get the painter to actually paint them........

Thanks to everyone for the replies.
