Swap went great. best mod I've ever done on a car so far. Feels like I gained 100hp.

I was back in the wood crate that holds the original engine & trans last weekend and took some more photos. Not sure these help with verifying originality - they are the best I can do given how the engine and trans are secured in the crate.

Smart investment move to buy the original drivetrain. No question. Base 350 or 3x2 427 you'll want that drivetrain at some point. Believe me. And, God forbid, if it had to be sold for some emergency, you would know it would have a higher value even with it sitting in a crate.

I wish I could get the original L48 block for our '76. I'd build it up with nice heads and top-end but knowing it was all together would be a mild personal comfort. But it's long gone.

Later,

Lee

if it were a big block.. that's another different story.
I was going to say the same. If I were looking for a numbers car I'd hit a seller hard for the trouble/risk involved in reinstalling the original engine. Doubtful I'd pay an additional $2k or more for a base model in this situation. I'd most likely move on to one which is original, not messed with, numbers engine still installed. If there are many base model, numbers match cars available, why would a buyer do all that work unless the car was selling very cheap?

Earlier in the post someone mentioned when it's gone, it's gone. IMO whether a purist or not, I'd like to have all options possible. If you do "store" the engine, or anything with fluids, prep it.

(I didn't have the whole thread available, so I apologize for post after the fact)

Default Numbers Matching

First time Corvette owner, last week I bought a 1969 numbers matching coupe, so far I've only verified the engine, supposedly the trans and rear end are original. The engine was completely rebuilt in 1988 but it has only run at least 600 miles, the repair bill does not include the mileage but there's a receipt about 3 months after rebuild showing the miles. I plan on keeping it stock unless the cruising rpms are too high then I would go with a 5 speed and put the original trans away (if I can verify it's the original tranny)

Wow, 600 miles in 22-27 years? That's almost "stored". I hope one of the first things you did was drain and change fluids.

Haven't had time to do much, did test drive it and it runs good, tomorrow I'm going to get the title changed, it turns out there's a digit wrong, where the S should be there's a 5, I was too busy comparing the engine number to the vin I didn't bother to look at the numbers in the title, hopefully it'll go well.
I own a 55 chevy that had the original drivetrain 235 3spd on the column, I pulled it out as I built if for my enjoyment and to be a highway cruiser, but in this case the value is quite different so my plan is to leave it stock as far as I can,I know the carb and ignition are new due to the receipts that came with the car. The paint is original. I was trying to figure how to post pictures, will do that soon.
Going to my first Corvette show in May, I belong to a El Camino club and we were invited to attend, looking forward to it, Tony.

Ut oh,...I feel the possible pain with a VIN issue. I had that problem and it took a few visits to DMV to get straight. Good luck.

Don't want to take away from original thread so I'll be brief, got tittle in my name and a tag on it. Took it and the original engine for a short drive to get gas, love it.
