I have just deciphered my block # and found out it was a CE casting (crate engine) I was wounding if this was a warranty replacement block or a over the counter purchase, is there any way to know. Any help and info would be greatly appreciated. The block number is CE3A953 98 its in my 73 L82
CE, for Chevrolet Engine were supplied equally for warranty and over the counter spares. The 3 after the CE means that it was assembled in 1973. No further decoding is possible.
Hi c,
I believe that the CE blocks that were used for "under warranty replacement" had the stamped information on the pad, while blocks that were "sold over the service counter" had blank pads.
That info is from one of John Z's posts a couple of years ago.

Alan
It would be interesting to determine how many of the numbered and dated parts from the original engine in your car were moved to the new block.
Hi c,
Check things like the intake manifold, cylinder heads, exhaust manifolds, and water pump.
These will give you an idea of what was saved from the original engine.
Check both the part number and date code.

Alan
Hi c,
I believe that the CE blocks that were used for "under warranty replacement" had the stamped information on the pad, while blocks that were "sold over the service counter" had blank pads.
With additional research, the above was found not to be accurate. Both spare and warranty short block had CE numbers. Bare blocks had no stampings.
