Default Gouges if front frame rails

The front frame rails have two gouges on each. There is one just in front another just after the spring pocket. These gouges were caused by very poor welding if you could call it that . I will weld and blend grind. This is my first C3. I'm replacing bushings and ball joints. I also plan to straighten bent crossmember.
Nothing like spending all day cleaning 42 years of leaks and grime.
Has anyone seen this or know why it is this way.
I'm a new member and happy to be aboard.

Hi S,
WELCOME!
First Post!
I'm glad you're here.
There should be a a vertical oblong hole a few inches to the front and rear of the spring pocket in the frame member.
It's where tabs from the front crossmember are welded to the frame rails.
It appears yours has had a repair done to it after the car left St.Louis.
Regards,
Alan
