Default Timing question

Should I read a higher advance than initial at idle? I pinched off the hose to the vac advance and set the initial at 10 degrees, removed the clamp and it still read 10 degrees. Do I have a problem with the vac advance, or is that normal? I also was running slightly less than 15' of mercury at idle.

Depends which vac port you have the dizzy plugged into and if the adv on the dizzy works...

Try clamping off the hose and removing it from the distributor. The distributor is probably holding the vacuum pressure.

I moved it from the smog port to manifold vac. The diaphram looks like the original (78). Not sure if the advance is working or not, going to replace it and check again.

If the vac advance is working correctly, will it read the total of vac advance and initial timing at idle?

Yes, if vacuum advance is working, you are using a full manifold vacuum source (not ported) and the source has sufficient vacuum to operate the cannister.
To check if vacuum advance is operating (sometimes the cannister goes bad) just use a mighty vac or suck on the hose. You should see the distributer plate rotate.
