Default Replacement Heater Core fit

Hello

Has anyone else to do some fitting with replacement heater cores? I had mine tested and then began fitting it. The two straps needed to be modified to hold the thinner core. I also had to modify the shield that covers the outlets. I was unable to mount the spacer (stay) that holds the two tubes.

Anyone else need to make changes.

I've replaced one factory air core and one non-AC core without having to modify anything for either. Are you sure you have the correct core?

Mike,

Yup.. Ecklers 26247. I wont be able to use the spreader that screws in but other than that its ok. Core is 1/8 thinner which made the retainers a bit loose.

I replaced the heater core in my '70 LS-5 non-air car and had no problems! The heater core was purchased from Zip and was an exact replacement.

Thanks Jim

Well its in and done. I cant believe what you need to disassemble to do it. Its true when they say the car was built around the box.

That just made me discover that the blower motor needed to be replaced.. so as with any Vett... Loosen the AC belt, remove radiator overflow bottle, then remove the blower motor.

I've got the dashboard completely out of my 79 as I type for this exact reason. Just waiting to see how much money I"ll have left from Christmas before I start putting things back together. There's plenty of "while I'm at its" I want to tackle.

Timely topic. I was just getting ready to ask the same question. I just returned one for that very reason. It was about 1/4" thinner than the one I removed however the replacement was an aluminum unit. Anyone know where to find a quality copper (American Made?) replacement?

The heater core from Zip was an exact replacement in size and appearance. It was a well-made copper unit, althought I seem to recall that the box said the core had been made in Mexico. Again, this was in a '70 big-block, non-air car. I installed the heater core from the engine compartment while I had the engine out. The install went fine with no problems. Zip part # M-325, 68-79 heater core w/o AC, $62.95

It seems to me that the non AC heater cores, usually dropped right in, but the AC ones always seemed to be a struggle.

It didn't make any difference if it was an AC Delco part, or a replacement one either. The cores for air conditioned cars, never want to go right in. The problem comes from the length of the tubes, and the bends in them.

My Ecklers core is copper and well built. The only thing I did was reshape and shorten the two straps and then left off the spreader. the gasket that slides onto the pipes to seal it form the outside will keep them separated.

Other than that its a good fit.
