Just wondering if there are any numbers on the body or in the VIN to identify if a car was an LT1. Not that it is important because my 72 doesn't have the original engine , but curious because it has an LT1 hood and dual snorkel air cleaner. I was told that the original engine was removed to install a high performance race engine and the previous owner couldn't tell me where the original engine was.
Other than the VIN code, there would be nothing on the body which would be LT-1 specific. The car would have been a regular production coupe or convertible with the LT-1 option package added.
There are a few other items that you can use as clues to help determine how the car was delivered, but these may have been changed as well. (Most people wouldn't catch all of them.)
FYI- LT-1's where delivered with Open Element Air Filters.
The LT-1 has a 6500rpm tach, unless it was one of the few delivered with A/C (5600rpm redline).
The LT-1 used a Holley carb. There should only be one fuel line from the fuel tank to the fuel pump. Quadrajet equipped cars (Base and LS-5) would have two fuel lines from the tank to the pump.
The LT-1 and LS-5 half shaft clamps were Heavy Duty and look like blocks, while the base engine cars clamps look like straps.
