so I took my 79' to the do it yourself car wash and while spaying the car off I managed to snap this clip that was holding the rear window trim on and while fixing it I managed to break the trim entirely off along with all the clips does anyone know how to replace them?
Sounds like you broke the black clips? Do you have pictures? By the way, in my humble opinion it's always better to wash your car by hand in the driveway if possible!
im not it the position to take picture s really im not at home and I wont be for about a month it was just something I was thinking about so I though I would ask
From my experiences...( part number 1 in Willcox's first diagram) the back glass has to come out to be able to set the pins of these SPECIAL clips.

I've actually replaced them with the glass in. It's not easy but it can be done. What you do is bend the push pin so that it has a radius to it. Then you can carefully push it in place with needle nose pliers.
Getting the old out can be done with a set of side cutters and you just cut through the plastic clip. You have to be very careful not to touch the glass in any way... (because you know that poof sound the glass makes when it explodes..)

I've been wanting replace the exterior trim on my '79 because it just looks worn but have always been afraid to hear that poof sound coming from both the glass and my wallet

Just take your time and be gentle with the plastic clips, you'll get it.

MAN...you have got BIG B@LLS!!!!!
In most of the cases where these clips are snapped off and broken....the darn urethane and the window is so close to it...it is POINTLESS. Heck...as you know they are FUN to do even if the glass is out of the way.
Yeah...just ONE NICK in that glass and POOF. I have learned that anything I 'feel' that a 'poof scenario' can occur on any tempered glass....I apply my 'crash wrap'...so if it does...at least it is all together and clean up is easy and shards getting in my eyes is almost non existent.
