Default got my vette back

Sold the 81 vette back in 2013 because of money issues. The guy I sold it to did nothing with it. I bought it back. It still has the blown motor. I did find a motor for it. 396 big block with 6k on it. Ls6 454 heads. Been sitting for close to 20 years in a 72 elcamino until a barn fell on it. So I guess that will go into the vette soon enough. I will post pics of the vette soon.

Awesome. We need more late model corvettes with big blocks. I've been thinking about doing it for a while now.

Will be watching this one too. That's great that you were
able to get your car back. When I did my 77 swap I left that long
water pump on and the alt on the right side like in your pic.

Lots of fun, good luck with it.

Nope, first one was the 348 in the '50's, 396 was a mid to late 60's unit.

I thought the Chevy big blocks were 400 and up
The initial "big blocks" were introduce mid way through the 1965 model year in Impalas and Chevelle SSs, as 396s. In '66, they bore/stroke was altered, netting a 427, which was available in full-sized Chevys and Corvettes.

To meet increasingly stringent smog standards, the bore and stroke of the 396 was altered, making it a 402, but since the Chevelle model was known as the SS 396, the marketing people didn't make a big deal of this minor change.

In '70, the bore and stroke were once again altered, and full-sized Chevys, Chevelles, and Corvettes all got 454s, as optional engines.

Yeah, but the 348/409 wasn't really a "big block", in the sense of the Mark IV engine architecture.

Long water pump fits ok? Also what did you use for the power steering pump mount?

first of all let me say I love big blocks and I'm not trying to discourage you but you have to supply a little more info to see if this is a good combo. Is this a running engine? You know LS6's had rect port heads for high rpms(open chamber) 396 had closed chamber heads so you would lose alot of compression because of piston design.Which 396 was it?,325 horse 350 or 375 horse? The small 396 had a mild cam,not for high rpm. Do you see where I'm going with this, miss matched parts could leave you with a real slug and it could be very expensive to get it running right.Do your homework and post what you have and there are people on the forum that will help you get the most bang for your buck. ps nice looking vette and good luck.

Everything fits great. The ps pump mount is nothing more than
the stock mount with a piece of steel welded to the back of it to
line it up with the crank pulley.

Then I put a few holes in a 1 inch steel bar and filed them to form a slot. Bolted it from the ps pump to an unused boss on the water pump to snug up the belt.

It is a 66 block. 375 hp. It was a running motor. Just been siting for 20 years. Only 6k on it. It was dynoed at 606 hp before it was stored. Heads are closed chamber.

Took the motor apart today. Was not happy to see a bolt loose on #4 crank journal. Bearings are ok and still see the crosshatch on the cyl.
