What do you mean by no reverse? Will the shifter go into reverse, but the car doesn't move. Will the shifter not go into reverse? If it does go into reverse and you let the clutch out, does the car slip, or bog?

Did you do anything with the shifter other than detaching the levers from the tranny?
Are you sure the clutch is releasing completely? Put it in first gear and depress the clutch, see if you (or a helper) can roll the car. Or if it's on stands see if you can rotate the back tires.
