Not to crash your thread. If any one is interested. I have a complete 496 stroker 4 bolt with aluminum square port heads. Its complete from intake to oil pan freshly rebuilt ready to drop in your car never fired up. I also have a freshly rebuilt 454 4 bolt from intake to oil pan never fired up. Both motors are set up to run on pump gas. PM me for specs and details.

What do you guys think of this set of heads?
781's are regarded as the best street heads GM ever made. For street use, why not use what you have?
Will the heads need work for my hp goals?
Also that 80lb weight savings is pretty tempting.
Can I run 9.5 compression and boost later, on iron heads and stay on pump gas? This one's the big reason I'm considering going to the AL heads. (the weight saving is another huge secondary perk).
Brother, 450 horses out of a big block is not done with a crazy modified engine. Match your parts correctly and it's done relatively "easily". Yes, 781's will take you to 450, bigger valves can support 550+ depending on who you ask. As for F/I, I have no idea but I would think you would have multiple issues other than just heads...

Yeah the internals are going to be swapped out this point anyway, which is the biggy. Other than the question about the compression, and iron heads. I know with AL on an sbc it's easily doable, especially since I'm not planning on running really crazy boost numbers (at the moment at least we'll see when I go that route).
So I'm looking at the 489 stroker, get a good cam that's good for up to what 5500? 6k? Hyd roller cam, roller rockers, headers, and an intake to match? And that's all it'd take?
RPM's will depend on lots of things but that seems like a high rpm range. Just throw everything into a piston speed calculator and see how it works out. I'd be willing to bet 5k would be the acceptable ceiling.
Looks like it just squeaks by at 5500.. (3850)
5200 is 3683. Which is more where I think I'd feel more comfortable. Looks like plenty of a safety margin. I figure that'd be where Id' set a rev limiter.
Going to be ordering the stroker, I am going to spend a little more on it, now rather than have to worry later. Forged crank and rotating assembly for about 2k going in it.
Got some other projects that came up this weekend. Apparently my C4's weather stripping isn't so good anymore as I found out after I finished washing it
Also helping my buddy pick out a stereo receiver for his trailblazer, and have some brakes to bleed with the vette.
Also discovered that my trans is shot in the Z-28. Debating on converting it to a 6 speed manual, or putting a seriously built unit in it's place or having this one built.
Still going to order the stroker here soon. Vette's pretty much to the point that I can quit fiddling with it for a while now I think. So progress!
