I read and have used Ken Snyder's great article on alarm system repair. However, I have one question that I do not think was answered in his article. When I had to repair fiberglass and re-rivet the back plate for the alarm button on the passenger side I find that there are two white wires. One goes to the switch the other to the back plate. Does anyone know where the white wire to the back plate goes? I assume the switch white wire is the one that goes to the alarm switch on the drivers side.
Also, if anyone has a wiring diagram for a 76 please direct me to it. It seems that I have found on 77 diagrams with the door switches grounded and not two wires white and blue going to the switch.
PM me your email address and I can send you some 76 wiring diagrams. However, I'd really suggest buying a set from Doc Rebuild; his diagrams actually show the connectors at the ends of the wiring so you can easily identify something you find unplugged. Cant link to him since he's not a supporting vendor but you can google him.
This thread is talking about a 75 alarm system, but as far as I know the 76 is identical. The diagram Wilcox posted at the bottom of page 1 does not show a 3rd wire.
This thread is from 2009 and shows a diagram for a 70, but the parts are mostly similar, if located differently. It shows the 3rd wire at the door ajar switches that you're talking about, but does not indicate what it connects to. Like my76ray, I'd say probably a ground.
Thanks for all of your comments. The problem is solved. As Ken Snyder's article stated, there is a wire that connects the two switch back plates. That is the third wire. I assumed that one of the switch wires, light blue and white, connected to the other back plate. When I took off the other inspection cover, where the body mounts are, I found that the wire had broken off the back plate. I used a jumper to determine if the broken wire was the culprit and it was. I now have to enlarge the hole where the wires go through so that I can remove the back plate. Connect the broken wire, and re-rivet the back plate.
Additional information about the alarm system. The alarm horn is fused off of the instrument fuse. Also, the door ajar light will work even if the wire connecting the two switch back plates is open and the fuse is removed. Because the door ajar light was working I thought all wires were connected, wrong.

I finally got around to looking through my 76 AIM tonight. The third wire grounds the plate to the birdcage. UPC12L Sheet 8 shows the plate and wire as item 9, and even makes a note that the area should be clean for the ground.
Now I feel bad: I should have looked at the AIM first thing when I got home instead of letting it drag out this long. Sorry original76.
