I have the supposedly static cling plastic to put of the deck lid to keep the top from scratching the paint, but after awhile this thing does not do the job. I was thinking of getting a piece of felt to use in its place. Anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks
Larry
Paul, its the original top and is good condition, I even put some lubricant on the rubber. didn't do much good.
I haven't had that problem but to be honest the number of hours I drive with the top up April-October is perhaps less than a dozen. I do use GM Silicon Emulsion on the weatherstripping as extra protection. My hardtop gets the same treatment with no problems. But your felt solution seems very reasonable.
I always thought there should have been a stainless steel trim piece installed where the rubber contacts the body to prevent this problem. It always causes a problem when the car has been recently painted and the paint is not fully cured. The rubber can leave marks in the fresh paint . You almost have to leave the top down for the whole summer and expose the paint to the sun.
I have the static strips too. The only time my top is up, is during winter hibernation under the car cover. Drive topless. I don't have scratches. But I'm on this post to see others advice.
I'm not a fan of those deck protectors....don't like the look. I just keep the weather stripping clean and lubricated. I use Meguiar's Vinyl & Rubber Cleaner & Conditioner. It's the dust and dirt that can get in between the ws and deck that can cause scratches.
If the scratching is caused by the rubber and not some piece of metal I would try the paint defender stuff from 3M. I use it on my motorcycle tanks to protect the paint from scratching where my jacket rubs on them. Its spray on and you remove the masking while its still wet so the lines nearly disappear, peels off pretty easily and does a good job of hiding any scratches that are already there.

That's what I was advised to do. This a Cali repaint with a water based solvent paint (PPG).
