Default Two problems with lights

More things to fix, hope it is simple. I have two problems with the lights.

First is the headlights.
When they are on low beam the bright light on the speedo is lite, if I push the dimmer switch to brights it goes out. I was not sure if they could be hooked wrong, but with the plug there is no way to do that. So that has me stumped The lights work fine on low, and high.

Second is the side marker lights.
Like jimkair had was like mine except my lights burn with parking, or headlights on. I did a little more checking and found if the hazards light on the rear marker lights do not work. Also the tun signal light on rear marker do not blink. I checked the bulbs they are good. I do not under stand why, because they burn with the headlights on. And that i guess causes the turn signal to stay on with the lights on. I was not sure if the flasher could be the problem.
Thanks for any help.

Sorry, I'm not any help on the 76 wiring, but the warning light connects right to the high beam wire that goes to the headlights and the only thing that comes to mind it the wires are reversed at the dimmer. Any chance the dimmer switch was replaced with one that was a different configuration?
As far as the other lights, someone with a 76 will have to help with which of the markers should come on and blink with the other functions. Sorry, wish I could help.

Thanks 65GGvert.
I checked the dimmer switch and could not tell if it had been replaced. With the connector they could not reverse it. I was out there under the car, and something came to me, is it possible if the wire to the high beam was connected to the low beam light be the problem. The PO had the car repainted, and if the paint shop reversed the wires, could that be the problem?
Thanks again for the help 65

It would take some hard work to connect them wrong like that, but I guess possible. The indicator on the dash lights up when 12v is on the bright wire, usually light green. If that light green wire and the tan wire from the dimmer up to the front of the car were reversed, I guess you would get the symptom you have. I'd have to do some wiring checks to see what that would do to your brights and dims up front. On my car, all four lamps light on bright and only two on dim, but there is a single wire from the dimmer to the front for each and that is the wire that would have to be reversed. I'm not sure is the 76 is the same.

Do you have a wiring diagram????

If not...now is a good time to get one.

Headlight problem: IF the 'BRIGHT' light in the dash is lit when the headlights are ON and the LOW beams are the only lights working...which means that ONLY the OUTER two bulbs shine. Someone has done some messing with your wiring....BECAUSE...when you press you dimmer switch....and the 'BRIGHT" light in the dash goes OUT.....and ALL FOUR headlights shine....someone has connected the TAN wire to the GREEN wire somewhere and vice-versa. TAN wire operates the LOW beam.....LIGHT GREEN wire is for your HIGH beams.

Side marker light problem: I honestly can not understand what you wrote.

The rear side marker lights in the rear quarter panels ONLY light up when the park lights or headlight are ON...They do not blink. ONLY the front side marker lights blink.....IF my memory serves me correctly. I know that do not blink when the turn signals are on either.

I do not understand what is happening when you use your HAZARDS....you text is not clear on this. you wrote the side markers 'do not work'...but does that mean they go out completely or do not flash.

I will write this....IF your HAZARDS and TURN SIGNALS work PERFECTLY when the HEADLIGHTS are OFF.....And when you turn your headlight ON....the TURN SIGNALS or HAZARDS fail to work....You have a ground problem in one of the sockets.

Thanks Dub for reply!
I have a corvette shop manual,General Motors, and a Haynes manual. I looked at all diagrams today over and over to see if I could see any thing out of the norm, but came up empty. I see there is a tan wire and light green going to the low beam from dimmer switch and light green going from dimmer switch to dash on the diagram. It is hard to see everything under the car without taking it all a part. I guess that will be next.

As for the rear side marker lights, I was under the impression they blinked with the turn signal, and hazards on along with the front side markers. The lights all work with the parking lights and headlights. Rite now the front side markers blink with turn signal and hazards on just not the rear. I spent just about all day looking for a lose ground wire with no results. If the sides are not suppose to blink then I have to look for something up front at those lights why they blink. I guess that will be just as hard figure out.
Thanks again, I know you are very good at what you do on corvettes.
