The factory routing would have had the exhaust come to gether throuh a single catalytic converter roughly under the passenget seat, then continue down that side of the car and splitting into dual mufflers. (If it is like my 80.)
There are kits from places like CC that follow that routing but preserve actual dual exhaust.
The other option is side pipes. Stock style or Hooker are the biggies Here.
I'm trying to decide the same thing on my 80.

Your '78 is different than the '80 posted above. You should be able to run dual pipes straight back through the crossmember like the pre cat converter cars did.

...but depending on your transmission (automatic or manual)...during the pre-catalytic cars....there is a special center exhaust hanger that attaches between the transmission and transmission mount...or actually attaches to the tail shaft housing of the transmission.....so it can be possible that depending on your transmission you have....you could order exhaust for it already made...and that is depending if you are using cast iron exhaust manifolds or not.
