I am trying to understand what the back cubby should look like from immediately behind the seats, up the panel to the flat (storage) part of the cubby. The attached picture shows what I have right now which I don't think is stock. I have covered the rise from the cockpit floor up with some black carpet just to tidy it up. When I bought the car it had two 6x9 cutouts for speakers which I have since covered.
At the top of the rise up from the floor is about a 2" lip? I have no idea if this as it should be or if it was added to hold back anything from sliding forward.
Looks otherwise fine. You are missing the storage compartment door locks and pull loops. The 72 assembly instruction manual (AIM) shows how these install and lists the original part numbers for the hardware you need.
Jack and lift out tray install in the compartment on the left in your pic (passenger's side); center is the glove box; right side is the battery compartment behind the driver's seat.
Hi Greg,
Originally the carpet went up over bulkhead behind the seats and was tucked under the forward edge of the compartment door frames.
It looks like yours might do that but I can't tell for certain.
Regards,
Alan
On the vertical surface behind the seats there should also be a metal bar, about 2 inches wide to hook the t-top holding strap. I'd post a picture, but I am missing that piece too.
Hi,
There were 3 of the straps, one on the bulkhead, and one on each of the top of the wheel wells about 6" to the rear of the shoulder belt reels.
They were called 'footman loops'…. honest.

Alan
Alan/Brit:
Great pictures - that is what I need. It seems that at the top of the bulkhead, under the carpet on the rear side there is more mass of some description than what I have. Mine is only about a 1/4" thick at the top. It looks like there is something an inch or so wide needed that the carpet wraps around and then transitions rearwards.
As far as I know it's the original carpet. Cars only done 30k and it doesn't seem to have been taken out at any time
Stuart
Did you switch the glove box lid lock to the jack storage lid? Or, is that the correct location?

Here is a pics of what I have.
Is that the correct battery orientation? My '71 has the connections in the rear.

Early cars all had top post batteries; later cars got side posts. No need to be concerned since a lot of the replacement batteries for the old top posts are side post. No harm; no foul unless judging is a concern.

My '71 still has the factory side mount battery cables.
Hi Greg,
Originally there was a strip of jute underpayment on the REAR side of the bulkhead that helped 'fluff' out the carpet as it went over the top of the bulkhead.

Alan

FWIW, I'm not sure how Easy Mike defines "early cars", but the thread's title indicates subject car is a 1972. 1972 cars had side post batteries from the factory, with the negative post oriented toward inboard. As Mike says, this is really only important if originality or judging is important to you and your car.
Thanks for the input on the battery - this is the way it came from the previous owner and it may have more to do with the power supply to the stereo that was installed. I'm not worried about judging; I'm more concerned about having it safely installed. Is there a particular reason I should move it around?
