Hey all, I will be taking my 71 to the cottage this summer and want to leave it up there for about one month. Will commute back and forth on my Harley and want it up there for some sweet up north cruising. My question is, I will be parking it on grass. No drive way at the place just a flat grassy drive way. ( most cottages are like that where we are ) I want to stake down a water proof tarp and park the car on top of the tarp covered with a out door car cover. Is this ground tarp a good idea? Trying to avoid moisture to come up from the grass and rot the heck out of my baby. Any thoughts would be great. Cheers.
The green car is not mine. Its a cruel owner who live around the corner from me.

Can you mow/cut the grass as short as possible where the tarp will be laying?
Harley!
Oh ya the grass is cut right down. Very short. I was just wondering if the tarp on the ground will more harm than good?
love my Ultra. It gets all kind of miles on it every summer. Just had a bunch of performance and stereo stuff done this winter. Cant wait to check it out.
With absolutely no research or first hand experience to draw on, my gut feeling is parking that nice car on a piece of plastic under an "outdoor" cover for three months is not a good thing. For about 300-bucks, you can get a 10'x20' cover, with sides, from Harbor Freight. If zoning lets you, frame a 10x20 area on the ground with landscape timbers and have river rock spread in the parking area. Nothing beats a roof, and sides are icing on the cake. On further review, I suppose the tarp floor might work with the faux garage. I've seen bad things happen to good cars while they are covered with miracle car covers that keep out the bad stuff, yet wick away moisture...not! Your Corvette is one fine looking ride!
Any good storage units available where you are? Rent a unit for the time being. Have the sense of security that your good looking vette is protected from the elements as well as being secure.
We have a place in Sauble beach ( lake Huron ) There are some great spots up and down that coast. From Tobermory to Kingcardine. Some nice July top down driving. It should be OK for one month. Will have a batt tender on it and will cover it with a good out door tarp. Just have to decide on the ground tarp.
Putting a tarp over it (if it is waterproof) will be fine, as long as there is room for adequate airflow under the car. If you seal the tarp to the ground, moisture will just wick-up through the ground and it will be 100% humid under the car with nowhere for it to go. Result: very quick rusting!!!

I don't agree. A waterproof tarp will hold moisture under it not wick thru. Airflow under the car will be good. Just don't let water pool up, park on incline.

I kept my car outside in a carport for a few years with a concrete floor. One day changing the oil I noticded the surface rust appearing in various areas. Take it this is a 77. I moved it to my heated house garage and moved my c5 to the car port. No more surface rust. Being a landscaper I have seen tarps laying on the grounds for days and they do hold some moisture and bugs, critters, earth worms, ect, as well because they too want to get away from the elements of mother nature. I recommend trying to find a local storage place near by to keep the car inside for a month. You can always swap the bike and car out from this storage place. For what you are going to pay for a tarp, some gravel and car cover this seems like a no brainer. But I know you also want to keep the car in plain sight. Also make sure the sap from trees are not dripping. Sap will eat thru most car covers and I am sure a conv. top. It's your baby just continue to treat her right like I am sure you will do and good luck in your decision. Also parking on an incline has pros and cons. If its an automatic, be prepared for a down the road tranny seal leak, frt or rear seal depending upon incline direction.

Thanx for all the replies. Ok no tarp under the car. The no tarp makes more sense to me as it wont accumulate moisture under the tarp. The parking area does have a very gentle incline. So I will put something under the tire so there is no strain on the tranny seal. Good call on the tree sap as well. Thanx all. Feel like a chicken with a egg over here. LOL .
Air flow is huge. Just get one of those awning tents to keep the rain off.
I stored my 95 Impala SS on the edge of my property for 2 years and that particular area was dense shade and long grass under it. It was a solid car when I parked it there. That moisture ruined the car inside and out. It was one of the dumbest things Ive done.
