Hi G,
Rebuilders stamp?
Really need to know the casting number and date code on the rear flange of the block to begin to determine what this engine might be.
The pad has been pretty well 'worked over'.
Regards,
Alan

It looks like whatever was originally stamped there, was ground off, and those numbers/letters were then stamped on the pad.
This is a fairly common practice among engine rebuilders. By stamping their own identifier on the pad, they can tell if it was a rebuild they performed, if there's a warranty issue.
Near as I can tell, the 3914636 block was only ever used for the 1968 307 cu in, 200 hp, 2 bbl carb engine in Chevy passenger cars (Camaro, Nova, Impala, etc) and pick-ups.
This explains the "307" stamped in the block. The "cj" is probably the rebuilder's initials, and "96" could be when it was rebuilt?
