Hi all... I probably should have posted this in the new member forum, but I figured I'd be spending most of my time in here.
I've posted a question or two, but I'm new to the forum. I'm in Fort Worth, TX, and I'm on my second Corvette (my first being a 90 I had in college... I loved that car, put 100k miles on it, and then wrecked it.)
My father-in-law started an 80 as a project about 8 years ago. I'll add some newer pics later (this is all I have on my computer today).
I love this car, and I have a lot of fun in it. But I can't decide if I want to:
(1) Keep it. Put in a ZZ4 and new trans. Fix all the little things that bug me (like non-working door locks, slow window motors, etc).
or
(2) Sell it. Get a 1972.
I love the 72s, but I also love my 80, and it was a project my father-in-law and I started together. Decisions, decisions....
Anyway... Look forward to getting to know some of you guys!
By the way, the little girl in a couple of the pics is my daughter, who is now nearly 7 years old!!
Big welcome but watch out for that Bats fellow....
Sadly the 80 will not fetch much as a non running project...but dont settle. .get what you really want most.

Hi Bats! Thanks!
Sorry if I was unclear... it DOES run, and it runs quite well. I mentioned the ZZ4 because if I keep it I do want an upgrade in performance.
A 72 in comparable condition will sell for much more than the 80. If you really want a 72, go for it though it will cost you more than you'll get for the 80. If you're quite happy with the 80, enjoy it, mod it as you like. Up to you, what you prefer.
Personally, I'd rather have the 72 than the 80, but I'd be hard-pressed to get rid of the 80 if I were in your place.
A comparable 72 would sell for more, so you'd have to sell your 80 AND come up with more cash to make the purchase. Alternatively, you can spend less by making the changes you want to the car you already have. If you do it right you might get your daughter attached to the car too: then it's 3 generations that have worked on it and she gets the joy of having worked on Grandpa and Dad's old car. Who knows?
I'd say keep it, upgrade it as you will, give it to her when she's old enough to drive and THEN go buy your 72.
Hi bb,
Interesting situation.
Is the 80 yours to sell?
How will your father-in-law feel if you sell it.
A 72 is quite a different car than the 80.
Maybe keep the 80 to drive, and buy a good 72 to have as a project WITH your father-in-law.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan
Great looking hair on that child!
LOVE the back window on that Starlight Coupe!!!!

Wow! Thanks for all the input everyone...
Yes, the car is mine to sell, and my FIL would be totally cool with it. He was never as attached as I am.
I've been a Corvette guy since I was 5 or 6... my favorite aunt always had one as a daily driver. My FIL knew I loved them and had wanted another since I had wrecked my 90 in college. He said... let's get one! Even though he put 90% of the money into it, he always said it was half mine, half his. When we moved to Texas 3 years ago, it sat in his garage and he RARELY drove it. So, a year ago he trailered it out here from Tennessee and signed the title over to me... said he wanted me to have it. That's a pretty great father-in-law if you ask me. So, the car does have sentimental value, and my daughter (who is almost 7) LOVES it and says she wants to drive it when she's old enough. I like Kris' idea.... give the 80 to my daughter when she gets her license and then get me a 72!

NO! Not sure I could've married her under those circumstances... Haha. She's definitely a Vette girl, but she's EXTREMELY frugal... 2 Vettes would be wasteful spending to her (not to me though)!

A little bit "Frugal" is not all that bad, nor is a little bit of "wasteful spending". I got lucky enough to find a girl with a pleasant blend of both. AND she likes old cars too! So a couple of those below are hers... we just don`t always agree on "who`s is who`s" sometimes!

Hate it when I'm the voice of reason but get what you want now. Who knows what you daughter will want when she is ready to drive. In this old mans opinion these old cars are not very safe for a new driver. (Ask me how I know). Get the car you want now and put her in a Tahoe or Suburban first. I know it's a long way off...just sayin'
Keep it-it's a beauty and something that has family in it already.
And sorry to hear about the mishap in the other post. I refuse to touch my phone while driving my Vette, which is an annoyance to my bride, who is used to having Bluetooth/hands-free chats in the car. Nothing is that important that it can't wait a little while until I'm off of the road.
