No condescension taken LeMans, I'm enjoying this thread!
As part of a complete referb, I put a new oil pump in her last spring. When I was installing the oil pump I noticed the rear main cap only had two bolts.
That is what sparked my curiosity. It wasn't even the engine designation per se, it was my recollection that most heavy duty GM anything, back then that shipped with a manual used a four bolt, the two bolts were usually used for Automatics. I thought that this may have had a trans swap. That's when I started to stew about the appraisal.
Those were dark days for GM back then, I wonder if a few stinkers snuck through...
The front cap and rear cap will only have 2 bolts. You need to look at the middle 3 caps, I bet you will find 4 bolts.

There ya go!
As mentioned above the front cap was only 2 bolts, as was the last cap at the oil pump(as seen in my pic)
Did yours have the windage tray?
I assumed that ALL the caps would be 4 bolt... look at me learning something! Since my engine work is all finished for the foreseeable future, I'll keep it all put together and take it on faith. I'm glad I got schooled on this here and did not jump all over the dealership. And yes, it does have a windage tray.
Thanks guys!!!!!

Did the BBs have 2 bolt front and rear caps or were they 4 bolt all the way through? Just curious. My '69 L71 block came back from the builder all prettied up with 4 bolt caps and studs from one end to the other. I never looked at it's stock set up before it went out.

It defiantly has two bolt caps at the front and rear. I did not understand that they could have two bolt at the ends but four bolts on the center caps.
I seem to recall Chevy small blocks having two OR four bolt caps depending on what the General put them in. But I'm old and suffer from C.R.S. (Cant Remember, uh, Stuff)
I do recall helping with a rebuild on a 350 in our 76, 1 ton tandem axle tow truck when I was a kid... It was a 4 speed, with a huge clutch and a PTO for the winches... It was 4 bolt end to end like you have. That I DO remember.
I have been spending way too much time working on little aluminum four and six bangers.

Hi outlaw,
I do believe the 427s that received 4-bolt mains did have them on all 5 bearing caps, and the L71 would have been one of them.
