Default front springs

I have searched for post on this and haven't found what I need. How do you tell the top of the spring from the bottom? Any input on this will be very helpful. Someone told me if the front springs are put in wrong it will make a difference on ride height. I got the car with new springs and the front has a high ride height and want to check if they are in right. If they are in right then I will have to cut some of the spring off to get a better ride height. Thanks for looking at this thread. Tom

Default ... and more Bubba questions ...

So Bubba has been so far into this car it just makes me happy to have taken it right down. I'm sure I know the answer but on a 71 should there be upper and lower bump stops on both sides? What is the proper orientation of the springs, meaning the tighter wound section of the front springs up or down in the spring pocket? Bubba had one in opposite the other.

Inquiring minds want to know!

Dave

PS if the bump stops are required on both sides upper and lower I will need one of each.

Hi P,
The upper a-arm stops are mounted on the frame and the lower on the a-arm itself.
The closer spaced coils are installed into the spring pockets in the frame.
There's a particular orientation of the end of the spring in the frame and the seat in the lower arm.
There are times that even with a very modified and bubba'd car it's good to have the AIM.
Regards,
Alan

Hi Tom,
Many aftermarket front springs have the coils spaced evenly throughout their length.
In that case you just need to be careful that the top and bottom coil seat properly in the depressions in the upper spring pocket and the lower a-arm pocket.
The rest is hope and prayer.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

I have the same problem with the springs I bought last week. There where made by federal mogul. The springs are not the same. They look different. One spring had two coils close together and the other spring didnt. I placed the top of the spring into the perch and made sure it was seated correctly by looking at the small hole at the top of the frame. But it didn't lineup into the bottom a arm. I had to cut 3/4 coil off so it would sit into the bottom a arm. At this point the car sat level at 26.75" off the ground to top of fender. It sits to high for my liking. The top a arm doesn't hit the rubber stopper on the frame-3/4" above the stopper. Its a common problem with these springs.
