the painter, who is doing a great job!, advises a pearl/metallic black stripe to go with the beautiful AOM paint. I really didnt dig it...just seems over the top to me...

Ron,
This is what I do for customers who are on the 'fence' or not so sure if it will look good...I shoot a small test panel so they can see it. Maybe he can blow some paint to get across what he 'sees' and so you can see if you like it or not. I have seen it...but the concentration of pearl/metallic are really controlled...so they do not look....weird. Pearls in the paint are different than pearls applied on top of paint...A completely different type of effect.
I painted my wifes Mitsubishi years ago and she wanted black with purple pearl. SO I did several mixes and increased the amount of purple pearl in the black paint (NOT on the paint) and shot panels for her to look at. The one she picked had purple pearl in it but it was not slapping you in the face and making the car look like a grape. It was still black...but in the right types of light...the pearl would catch your eye.
FINAL DECISION: I chose gloss/normal cleared black hood stripe over pearl AOM. Just couldnt go with a pearl black stripe (pearl/metallic was in the black)...seemed just too much "glitter" look in the stripe...just wasnt my style...I went with my gut! This feels right!
my painter, who again pushed the pearl black...saying it will make the WHOLE car work...that he felt a custom paint job needed a CUSTOM stripe/pearl...when I post you will see the car looks custom either way. He is a great guy and did phenomenal work. It was funny...he even said he was that confident that I would like it/grow on me, that he would repaint the hood for materials ONLY if I didnt. in the end, I feel most comfortable with black over pearl AOM.
i am leaning towards gloss black b/c the metallic seems to have a "glitter" look I dont really seem to fond of...
I on the other hand prefer the "glitter" look. Had a 77 Lincoln Mark V black with a glitter look when you got close up. I thought that looked so sharp!
There is no wrong way to do it here except the opposite of what the owner wants. Metallic stripes do look hot on metallic base coats. And opaque colors look great on metallic base coats. That's the classic look in my opinion.
