Default Rear Vent

I was helping another corvette club member with his 73 vert headlight problem. As I was walking around the rear, I noticed the rear vent were open, like you can see through them.

He tells me they were designed to allow air flor through them so the rear end would not lift up. Can someone educate me on their function? Becuase on my 72 LT1 they have a clear plastic insent from the inside, hence they are covered up.

Hi n2v,
The vents are part of the Astro-Ventilation system.
They had nothing to do with preventing rear-end lift.
On non a/c cars the interior air is drawn through the car and out those vents when the heat/temp control is on cold.
Except for a vacuum controlled flapper door the system is passive;
a/c equipped cars have a block-off plate in place of the vacuum flapper doors.
On convertibles with a/c you can look through the vents and see the ground.
A clear plastic 'insent' (sic) wasn't on the car when it left St.Louis….it's an owner inspired addition.
Regards,
Alan

This all came about because starting in 1968 there were no longer vent windows in the doors to crank open for fresh air.

Just to clarify Alan's very informative post. The 68's with non A/C were a completely passive system, meaning there was no vacuum operated door. Just a rubber "check Valve".
Lou.

Alan nailed it. If the 73 vert has a/c then the vent is just decorative and you can see through to the ground.

Here is the view from below on my 73 vert:
