Default Rear Struts

I went to put new struts on my 74,when I was installing them the rear wheel bearing spindle support is not lining up right. The fork is to far forward and dose not line up with strut bolt holes. The strut I took out was bent up in the middle and was not straight from top bolt to bottom bolt. any thoughts?

When the rear end is hanging its really hard to hook the struts up because the angles are all out of whack. To get them to line up you must have the full weight of the rear of the car sitting on the tires which means placing blocks of wood or something similar under the tires. With the tires carrying the full weight everything lines up great................

Strut rods were commonly bent by alignment shops that found they couldn't get the camber in spec even with the adjustment turned all the way. Reason being the inner yoke is worn out. So check your yokes.

I was thinking that but I said nobody would adjust camber that way. Thanks

How true! When buying parts for my 72 diff from a local shop, I inquired about a case spreader for a Dana 44 that I had in another corvette. They didn't use them, a bfh was the tool of choice

I took the car off the jack stands, the struts lined up closer but the fork still is still to far forward for the strut to line up. Any Ideas would be great. Thanks

Do you have the spring hooked up? I've never tried installing the strut rods with the spring hooked up and not sure it's even possible?

Unhooking the spring will make your life much easier.

Be careful, there's plenty of spring pressure even at full droop.

This was very common .....adjustment in the 1970 's .......I was a teen with my first 74 . I remember "watching " .....jaw dropped .....as the Goodyear Mechanic took a small sledge hammer and tweaked it.

My car was jacked up from of bad points too...... By stupid mechanics ......when I recall the stuff I saw done to my first corvettes I shutter now .

Given the shade tree and uneducated mechanics , it's a wonder any cars survived.
