421 is dark saddle, same as my '72. It does photograph lighter with the flash.

Here's my 421 with the interior lights on. It was an Ontario Orange car but I painted it black in the late '80s

Thanks, just curious. My identical copy of this car was built on December 17,1971. It was sold by the 23rd of December 1971.

Made some progress today. I removed the 72 engine and transmission from the 69 chassis today and then removed the driver side front to rear brake line and steering box.

This 69 chassis had some front end damage which was repaired previously but I am going to have it electronically dimensioned and then have the repaired area fixed correctly versus heating and pulling the frame. When completed I will share pictures of the finished work and then will rebuild this chassis to go underneath the vintage race car body I have here now.

This engine, transmission, and rear differential will be restored and installed on a newly restored 72 frame over the winter. I have original 72 parts for restoring the chassis and putting it back with the 72 Ontario Orange body.

For the restoration I will add some improvements to the original car.

For example, the rolling chassis will have Bilstein Shocks, Vette Brake Products front and rear handling components, new calipers, brakes, restored rear trailing arms complete, brake lines, fuel lines, gas tank, etc.

This car started it's like as a low optioned car but I intend to add power steering, power brakes, a tilt/tele steering column, and more. Stay tuned and I will share more soon.

Best regards,

David

The 72 chassis I will be restoring is being strengthened, reinforced, and dimensions verified at a premier body shop. When completed I will begin the process of stripping it down to the bare frame of all components, stripping the frame, and painting it with POR 15. Those are the plans I have for the winter, but stay tuned.

I also had a little time to look over the body a bit more closely and removed the seats. I will remove all the carpeting, seat belts, covers, rear compartments, in order to evaluate what can be restored and what needs to be replaced.

The interior pads will need a good cleaning after ten years of sitting and accumulating dust but that will be done in the weeks ahead.

Tomorrow I will remove the interior parts and post more photographs.

Thanks for watching.

No pictures to share today but I wanted to give you a quick update on what is happening next with the 72 Coupe restoration.

The 72 chassis has been reinforced in front of the front kick up area in anticipation of restoring the frame to better than new condition. I will be using the rolling chassis to haul another 72 frame next week as a frame transport dolly. When that is done I will begin the task of stripping the rolling chassis down and restoring it.

I have also analyzed the body and interior now and have purchased new carpet, new door panels, and new seat belts to use in the restoration as well. Seats will have their tracks restored by me as well.

I have a front frame cross member and I will install a new radiator core frame as well.

The car originally had a non tilt/tele steering column, non power steering, non power brakes, non A/C and non power window car.
I will install power steering and power brakes and a tilt/tele steering column to make the car a much safe handling and easier driving automobile.

Stay tuned, much more coming soon and I promise pictures as well.

Very cool project. Love the car. I assume you are staying with the original colors? Ontario Orange is one of my top 3 choices.

Very odd that a low option car like that would have custom interior at $158.00? That would have almost covered the cost of power brakes at $47.40 and power steering at $115.90 . Tilt steering was a $87.30 option.

Following this thread closely as I too am restoring a 1972 but mine is PS, tilt, PB and A/C with base interior. Being in the deep south A/C is hard to do away with.

Great pics! Looks like you have the right setup to get this done.

You decided to use the '69 frame provided with it after all?

This car will be using a newly restored 1972 manual frame just like the one it had originally off of the assembly line. (Pictured here prior to being restored) I located a 72 manual frame with a modified 72 body and have pulled that body off of the chassis. I will strip it bare of parts, strip it to bare metal, then prime it and paint it with POR 15. I will then rebuild the 72 chassis with existing and newly restored trailing arms, springs, calipers, brake lines, fuel lines, gas tank, rotors, etc. I have the original wheels which are restored, and the original engine (rebuilt), four speed transmission (rebuilt), 3.36 differential (rebuilt), and restored steering box. From here I will modify the car slightly to add power steering and a tilt/tele steering column. I will also add power brakes for safety and comfort to drive. This chassis will be starting soon and will done this Fall.

The 69 frame that came with the car (pictured here before restoration) is being repaired now in a shop in West Virginia and will be straight and true prior to being restored. It is such a nice 69 frame that I decided to rebuild it as a 69 rolling chassis complete and then re-deploy that at another time. I have 15 X 7 wheels from a 69 Camaro that I will use with this chassis an all new gas tank, gas lines, brake lines, steering box, power steering setup for the 69. It will be a very nice rolling chassis when I get done with it in the Spring.

The 72 race car replica will be built upon a newly restored frame and rolling chassis as well. I located and purchased a nice 72 frame which I am picking up Monday the 3rd, but this one is from an automatic car and will be measured, trued, welded for additional strength, and put into service on the racer with a newly acquired 454 565 HP big block, TKO-600 transmission, 3.70 beefed up rear, beefed up suspension, etc. It will be a very nice rolling chassis for the race car and I hope to be done with it this Winter.

It probably sounds confusing but I have a plan for restoring and reusing three full frames over the fall/winter and spring. No body work this winter, just chassis.

Stay tuned for pictures over the winter and should be an interesting picture this Spring with three rolling chassis in the same picture.

Best regards,

David

Default Frame Stripping Process

Here is the 72 manual frame that I am going to be restoring for use under the 72 Orange Coupe. This was a donor chassis which I had dimensionally measured and the rear Kickup areas repaired of rust and welds strengthened. This frame is now better than new, so now it is time to strip off all of the suspension and to restore the frame to begin the rebuilding process. I will have this done this weekend and will share more soon.

Stay tuned and thanks for watching.

I see your Bend Pack service / storage hoist. Did you use that for removing the body from the chassis? In on picture it looks like that may be how you had it set up. I have just about the same hoist and plan on lifting the body off my 1968 vert this weekend. I have taken measurement's but I am concerned if I will be able to lift it high enough to roll the chassis out.

Thanks, Jesse

Yes, I have used the Bend Pack for removing five bodies from the C-3 cars to date, and yes, you have to be creative in getting the rolling chassis out from underneath the body. Interference from the gas tank can be an issue. I take the wheels off the chassis and set it down on my wheel dollies for this activity and then roll it right out from under the body. I then set the body on the body dolly I build and have standing bye to receive it. Works well. Good luck with your body lift.

Best regards,

David

Thank you Arkus. It will be a while before I see it any where near completed but progress is being made weekly. Will continue to push it forward.

Back to the frame for now.

After a fun weekend at Carlisle it was time to get back onto the 72 Coupe and 72 road racer frame projects.

The 72 coupe is lagging the 72 racer but not by much. Currently the 72 coupe frame has:

1) Been repaired in the Kickup areas by welding new covers and reinforcements.
2) Power washing the frame.
3) Sanding the bottom of the frame.
4) Power washing the bottom of the frame.
5) Priming the bottom of the frame.
6) Flipping the fame over and putting it on the frame dolly.
7) sanding the top and sides of the frame.
8) Power washing the frame once again.
And that is the current status... ran out of energy and sunlight.

Stay tuned and thanks for watching.
