I'm in the process of rebuilding my PS pump. Took the reservoir off last night and found this.
I was expecting to see something closer to the second picture. Do I have an aftermarket pump? Any thoughts on what pump this is and if there are instructions on how to rebuild it?
Looking at the picture closely I think I can see a large snap ring groove inside your pump housing. Are you sure the cover plate and snap ring aren't inside your reservoir?
You got me on this one. The end cover is typically held in place by a round wire ring that fits into a groove in the pump housing bore. From your picture it appears that there is some sort of stamped spring clip that is taking the place of the round wire ring.
I have been retired for nearly 15 years and I don't recall anything but a cheap round wire ring. It certainly would seem that a wire ring would be less expensive than a stamped spring clip. (Maybe they don't have good round wire in China?)
On Monday, I will try to find a pump engineer at Nexteer (formerly Saginaw Steering Gear) and ask him/her to open this thread and comment on the picture. Things change.
Thanks Jim!! Keep in mind this car has not been on the road since 1990 and I don't recall ever changing the PS pump when my Dad owned it so this pump if not original is from late 70's early 80's. Definitely not from China. I will post a few more pics this afternoon. Also, keep in mind, my pump is the first picture of this thread. When I separated it from the reservoir there was no cover help in place by a ring.....
