Recently I replaced the chrome corner moldings on the outside edge of the windshield on my 82. After sealing everything up I have a tiny gap where the stainless trim meets the chrome when the T-tops are on. I have even replaced the weatherstrip on the tops and adjusted.I have tried several methods to remedy the problem but still have the gap and water comes in. So I decided to remove it again to see what's going on?? I have taken some pictures so please if you see something I'm missing please let me know[/URL[/URL[/URL[/URL[/URL[/URL[/URL
Ok I think I know why. First I logged out and came back as a visitor and they still showed up.. Hmm after posting Photobucket informed me I was getting close to maxing out so I deleted all pictures including the ones I posted thinking since I uploaded already they would be there. Evidently not. I will upload the photos again. Sorry everyone. Learned something new..
Ok we'll try this again[/URL[/URL[/URL[/URL[/URL[/URL[/URL
Not sure what you're looking at. I have the trim popped off so you can see the sealer underneath. My question was where is the sealer suppose to be? I will take new pictures later but my only concern was where the t-top stainless overlapped the corner chrome pieces I can't get a good fit from the t-top weather strip seal.
Here are a couple more pictures. What I'm trying to do is replicate what they did from the factory and looking at the AIM I guess this is how they did it??[/URL
But them I can't get the trim to sit flush so I removed it all and just added where the clip nuts go[/URL
Now this is as close to flush as I can get. Is this acceptable[/URL
The FIFTH photo in POST 10 is GOOD....CORRECT??? And by me writing "GOOD'...you are not having a leak or seeing light at his joint....CORRECT????
SO the problem is on the LEFT side...CORRECT???
I have run into this issue before. I will put a pad or ball of the 3M strip caulk on the 'J' nut in your chrome top molding where the screw will screw into it to SEAL off the screw area. IF I use the 3M strip caulk as you have shown ...I do it sparingly...and then I pump in the 3M bedding glazing compound. I do it WAY MORE than what GM shows.
Often times....I have to use my plastic hammers and straighten up the stainless trim where it meets with the corner chrome moldings. But ...I generally can adjust the top and the weatherstrip to stop any leaks at this point. A lot of this issue can be due to your weatherstrip...depending on how soft and flexible it is. And YES...I know...."But the other side is fine?" But it still can deal with the density of the weatherstrip.
It is hard to tell...but you might be able to raise the area where the screw goes in the right side and thus will cause the trim to lay flatter...instead of bow up....due to the screw is pulling down on the trim too much.
Ok DUB thanks and what I did was remove the strip caulk from underneath and just added it to the 'J' nut. That seemed to help a little. Now you mention bedding glazing compound? What is that and since you mentioned it I take it that is what GM used.
This is why I love this forum so much, I learn something new all the time!!
Well I think I'm done for now, I wrestled with the upper molding for a couple hours and it's finally on so I put the glass tops back on and sure enough I see that tiny spot of light coming through at that spot. Oh well but I did take a strip of 1/4" x 1/8" foam from a auto factory and applied it to the bottom of the t-top w/s where the groove is. Sat glass top back on and now it's gone.
