Hi? my 82 corvette, the windows are not flush with the pillar. there is a gap and windows don't roll up and down when doors are close. but roll up and down when doors are open. please keep an eye on the gap by the pillar and body
Been there, done that. 1ST do a search here on the forum. 2nd, if you don't have the service manual and assembly instruction manual (AIM) Get them. 3rd, be patient, when you start to get angry, walk away and do something else. There are multiple adjustment and you need to understand each. The only way to do this is to remove the door panels. The manuals have diagrams which point each adjustment. Good luck, you'll get it. Just take your time.
I have to assume that you have replaced the weatherstrips on this car at some point...CORRECT???
Pillar post...rear vertical and also T-top weatherstrips. Please let me know how many ...if not all of them have been replaced.
Is your problem with the left window only...or are BOTH windows needing adjustment???
Adjusting your windows ...in many cases will not do 'jack squat'...because of the front and rear rollers and or regulator rollers are bad (due to age and new design weatherstrips)...the window will have a mind of its own and NOT work correctly. NOT and opinion...but fact! And this applies EVEN if the weatherstrips are still factory originals in great condition.
*** Not knowing if this applies to you...so I am writing it for others******
Please keep in mind that many of the current weatherstrips that are being sold are NOT the same as what GM installed. So...depending on the weatherstrip density....a person CAN NOT EXPECT the door glass to operate the same as how it was designed.
It will be possible to make it so when the door is open...you can roll the window up and shut the door. It will close and seal correctly....BUT...once again...if your weatherstrips are dense...there WILL BE A CHANCE that the door glass will NOT have enough strength in it to actually press against the weatherstrips and SEAL out air and WATER. This is where the ROLLERS come into the 'picture'. ANY 'in and out' play in the front and rear roller makes any adjustment a WASTE OF TIME. TRUST ME...I KNOW! I have wasted more hours than a person can imagine to try to get around this...and there is NO other option than replacing the worn out rollers needed.....PERIOD!
Keep in mind...once again...that if weatherstrips are being replaced and the density is not as soft as what GM used...which were basically as soft as a marshmallow. This increased density will effect how the glass will press into these weatherstrips.....thus....causing a possible binding issue...which is why the window may not be able to go all the way up with the door shut.
Telling you how to adjust the windows is not that hard to do....but answering the questions I asked would help.
Willcox Corvette used to have a good write up on adjusting these windows. If I find the link I will post it.
My parts were too shot to do a good adjustment job on mine. I'll need to buy the parts to tighten things up before I tackle it again. Don't even try if your windows are flopping around.
This picture is larger than the one on the pdf so use it.. and then print out the pdf at the lower link. All the instructions were moved to our repair and install help page at this link. http://repairs.willcoxcorvette.com/
