According to information received from NCRS...my base 270hp convertible was not originally delivered to a dealership for sale...but rather it was delivered to the GM Proving Grounds / Chevrolet Engineering Division in Michigan.
My question is, has anyone else ever heard of this? And why would my car have been delivered there instead of to a dealership?
Hi V76,
I've read about that happening before.
I believe it has to do with Engineering needing a car to examine or perhaps do some sort of testing on.
Depending on what was done and/or how the car was used it was then sold, maybe to an engineer or through a dealer.
Regards,
Alan
Thanks guys. I'm trying to trace my cars lineage back to new. I've been successful going all the way back to 1976. And that's where the trail ends.
I know it was sent to GM Proving Grounds / Chevrolet Enginnering when new. Then I know a dealership sold it in 1976. I have all the owners and history from then till now, except for that span from 1971 when new till it was sold in 1976.
The dealership that sold it in 1976 is no longer in business.
I really wish I could fill in those missing 5 years. If I knew why it was shipped to the Proving Grounds instead of a dealership might help.

Yes. GM corporate folks could order cars.

As others have stated, the folks at Warren ordered it. It could have been an audit car for quality control purposes. It could have been a fleet vehicle on hand to be driven by others, possibly VIPs. It may have been ordered by a GM employee. It may have been a perk for a corporate girlfriend.
quite a few production cars were used as " baseline vehicles " for the engineering staff. they were also used as pool cars for executives. vehicles that had anything more than minor modifications or that could not be brought back to oe were crushed. I have seen some of these types of cars abused beyond belief , and other ones that were far better than when they rolled off the line.
