Default Power window repair

I came home came home from a local cruise yesterday and the power window on the driverside appears to have failed and will no longer go up. I had a feeling it was about to go and i went one day to long before tearing it all apart. I did the usual tests. The switch is good and the motor is getting power but nothing from the motor. What is the best way to support the window while i remove the motor since i cannot line up to the holes in the regulator to put a bolt in to hold it?

Thanks

Right now I am rebuilding everything in my doors and had the same issue with the window not going up. I messed around with a ground wire to the door itself and managed to move the window. The first thing I did was REMOVE the glass. You just need to get the window to where you can uncrew the glass from the track then slide it out. The other thing I noticed, and I could be wrong here, but I think the bolt is there not only to keep the glass from falling, but to keep the track ( which is under tension) from slapping down on your hand. Once you take the motor out that spring will unwind. I would put a short 2 X 4 under the glass, but I think there might still be rpessure on the spring. Here's the warning that came on my new regulator

You are right the spring is going to be under tension. As soon as i remove the motor that spring will likely unwind. Been doing alot of forum searching but i havent figured what im going to do yet. I dont really want to pull thw whole assembly out of the door.

I use my battery charger to give the motor a good shot of amps. And while I am giving it the 'juice'...I tap or shock the motor and a vast majority of the time..the motor will move.

Good luck on your power window motor replacement. I did the replacement on my wifes Altima, and know that there were certain bolts that held the tracks in place, and others that allowed the window to be pulled out.

With the warning on the motor that should warn you that there is some tension/danger somewhere in this replacement. Be careful.

Default Power window repair

Well i was able to get the window up to a point where i believe i can get a bolt through the hole in the regulator. I started the car hit the up switch and hit it with a hammer.... Alot. It only would go up a fraction of an inch each time but it finally made it. Now im just waiting for the replacement motor to arrive. Thank you all for your help so far. I will keep you posted on my progress.

Thanks again

I just finished mine. When I got the car, both windows needed a Hand to raise or lower. I just replaced all the rollers, and cleaned and lubed the tracks. (actually had to use a chisel to get the old grease out)

They work great now, about $100 and a few hours work.

Maybe I got lucky ?

Have a Great Day,

The tracks and everything in my door actually look really good. No gunk just what looks like lithium grease. Im guessing the previous owner replaced everything but the motor.

I do not waste my time replacing the brushes on these motors.

jdunfee,
Are you planning on removing the regulator to change out the motor.... or do it in the car???

KEEP IN MIND...the regulators SPRING is APPLYING FORCE UPWARDS....to compensate for the weight of the door glass. So working on the motor with the regulator IN THE CAR....the glass is not going to come down on you with any force. The window would go UP when you remove the motor IF the spring is good and tracks are lubed.

Im planning on doing it with the regulator in the car. With the bolt through the regulator from what i have read it should keep the spring from unloading. I have been following this guide i found. http://www.corvettemagazine.com/tech-articles/1968-1982-power-window-motor-replacement/

Makes sense that the window wont fall with alot of force with a good spring.

The spring CAN NOT UNLOAD because you have the regulator IN the car with the glass attached...so window stops will prevent the door glass from flying out of the car this due to the motion of travel that the regulator has can NOT be hyper-extended. THUS...the spring can not unload. It is physically impossible.

NOW...if you have regulator OUT of the car with the power window motor still attached....then YES...the bolt MUST be in place prior to removing the motor. I agree with that...but putting a bolt in it is up to you....but as like I wrote....the window is going to go UP when the motor is removed....NOT down....due to the spring pressure.

So i ordered a new power window motor from willcox last Sunday . Still waiting for delivery. Do they normally send out a tracking number when the ship? I never recieved any kind of confirmation. I was worried the order never went through so i called them last week and they said it processed on Monday since they were closed on sunday. Man i hate waiting .

I received my replacement motor this week and I had a chance to install it last night. Extremely easy process only took about an hour start to finish. I did put the bolt through the regulator just to be on the safe side. I only had to loosen a couple bolts on the regulator in order to remove the old motor. Now the driver side works so well it makes my passenger side look slow.

Thank you DUB and everyone else that helped. The amount of knowledge in these forums is invaluable.

Nice.. looks like it would cut your hand off..

Good job on the repair...

So you know, we're still trying to get the USPS and UPS tracking to merge with the new site... For some reason the new site is having issues with this... I'm sorry it didn't load for you but I'm working on this hard and have a meeting with UPS for next week about a solution.
