Default A/C Duct Hole

The underside of the center duct in my '68 has a hole in it which was previously covered with duct tape. I don't see it in the manual. What is it and what function does it serve? Thanks.

I had that opening also. It's been years, but I believe that it feeds a vent on the right side of the steering column. Some (maybe all) A/C cars had that extra vent.

There are a few rivets that were previously holding something on. Do you recall if it was more duct or just a grille of sorts? Thanks for your response.

I kind of remember a flange riveted to the duct, but I can't remember if the flange fed directly it the vent or if there was an extension.

The hole is there, because it's the wrong duct. 336471 is listed in the Corvette parts book as the 74-76 AC center distribution duct.

As jnb5101 guessed, it's for the air vent in the lower right front of the driver's side dash, on air conditioned 74-76's. The extra dash vent was not used on 68-73's, or on any non air cars.

This info came out of a 1981 parts book, which is the only one I have at the house, and it only lists the ducts back to 74. All of my earlier books are at the shop, but if you need the 68 part number, I can probably get it in the morning.

Thanks for the offer but this car is far from correct. When I purchased it I thought it had factory air however when I replaced the harness I found that it appeared to be a non air car with air added. A lot of mysteries. (no trim tag). Maybe you solved one of them...I now know what year the a/c system is. I think I will put the duct back in.
