Several months ago I purchased a set of Fiero seats to put in my 72 Convertible. Before I go out and spend $750 for Mr. Mike covers, I have a question for everyone. Have any of you bought new cushions for the original seats? If so, how much does it improve the comfort? Will new cushions improve the side support of the bolsters?

I restored my seats to original using Al Knoch foam and vinyl seat covers. The comfort level increased and I noticed I sat up a little higher too.
I restored the seats in my 73 myself and am very happy with the
look and feel also noticed the seat sat higher. I purchased the foam and
the seat covers from Willcox, both were from Corvette America. Followed
their video on installation and went very easy.
First restored the frames:
Then installed the foam and covers. Completed work:
I have taken the Fiero seats out of my car and put back the original Vinyl seats.
My wife does not like the Fiero seats, but after driving with the old ones. I remember why I hated them.
There is no adjustment. You cannot adjust the seat to allow you to sit more upright. you are slumped down....FOREVER.
The problem with the Fiero seats is you are pushed up about 2" and I am tall in the torso, so she says I look to tall for the car. I love the speakers in the headrest...miss them already.
If you are the only person driving the car, you might be able to fabricate two brackets that would essentially bolt the seat to the floor using the original bolts on the floor. You would lose the ability to move the seat back and forth, but you'd drop down about an inch or so and still be able to adjust the back of the seat. It's not ideal, but it is an option.

Anyone have another option?
The bolts with rubber covers where the seat back meets the seat bottom can be moved in/out to adjust the angle of the seat back.
I've always liked the look of the original seats and find them sufficiently comfortable after installing new foam and seat covers.
You can adjust the bolts with the rubber ends. However, adjusting them too far will interfere with the seat back locking mechanism. Chevy originally sold a shim kit to adjust the seat back so that the seat still locks in place. I bought mine from Keen Parts, but I'm sure Eckler's and Wilcox carry them, too.
So I just popped in the Fiero seats today and they wound up being a bit too tall for me. They were definitely more comfortable, but I kinda had that big guy on a little motorcycle feeling. I'll be posting my Fiero seats and the install brackets in the for sale section soon.
So I guess I'll be installing a new set of foam. My leather covers are in good shape. Would it be silly to replace the foam and reuse the old covers?

If your leather covers are in good shape it is a great idea to keep them and replace all the foam. Consider yourself fortunate.
The new foam makes a huge difference in the feel of the seat. We tend to forget the seats are 30-40 years old, even if not sat in they loose some of their ommmmf.
You'll sit higher, they are noticeably firmer and the back will actually have some lumbar support again.
That said, there's still very little in the way of bolsters on them, especially when compared to almost anything from the 80's onward.
It's too bad, there is a company that makes seat foams and matching covers for early Cameros that have all the stock patterns and materials but with enlarged bolsters (probably 1-1/2" to 2" by the looks of them. Wish someone did the same for ours.

So here are a couple pics to show the height difference with the Fiero seats. It looks like I sit about 3 inches higher. Part of that is probably due to being able to adjust the seat back.

I think the only way to lower the seats more would be to eliminate the adjustable tracks and fabricate a bracket that would permanently mount the seat to the floor in one position.
Hi L,
"Chevy originally sold a shim kit to adjust the seat back so that the seat still locks in place."
The seat shims to adjust, (lessen), the angle of the seat backs were originally part of the 'glove box' items for all cars until the seats changed configuration for the 78 model year.
